La Sen Bistro
La Sen Bistro is an offshoot of Berkeley's La Rose Bistro. After many years of serving to loyal customers of theater go-ers and the nearby UC Berkeley patrons, La Rose Bistro transplanted itself to downtown Concord to become La Sen Bistro.
With the same vision of serving great food, you will enjoy the classic California-French samples of duck confit, salmon in saffron sauce, lamb racks, and escargot - just to name a few. Our great food was recognized by the Michelin Guide in 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012 as well as the Zagat survey. Come join us at La Sen Bistro for a glass of wine and a taste of California-French cuisine.

"We went to this place twice with our two kids for diner. I am French so I would say that I know French food and the chef does a great job. The food is excellent, the place is classy but not stuffy like some Walnut Creek places. ....No really kid friendly but they ate the lasagnas and loved them. The filet mignon is exceptional.
The only negative thing that I would mention is that they are a little "cheap" on the bread they give you to start the meal. They gave us 4 slices to start and then when we asked for more we got 2...(for 4) . A waiter came and asked us if we wanted more as our kids were hungry and devoured it, we said yes but heard our waiter said "no they already got 2 servings"....I thought it was kind of cheap on their part...."

"I love the Magret de Canard Rôti dish - duck had very little fat, cooked perfectly to medium rare, and was served piping hot. The accompanying polenta square was crisp on the outside and soft inside. I also loved the Salade au Roquefort - delicious and ample size."

"This was our second time at Le Sen and it was every bit as good as the first time. Highly recommend it. Our waiter was very patient with us as we were with friend whom we hadn't seen in a long time and he didn't push us to order and eat and leave.... The food is fabulous. The crab cakes were very crispy on the outside and very flavorful!"

"We enjoyed our meal, but it was a very hot evening and fans weren't enough to be comfortable. Again because of the heat, the red wine was hot. Their wine bottles are stored above the cooking area. The food is very good, and it's a shame that the restaurant isn't prepared for hot weather. We will go back when the weather's cooler."

"The food was very good, unfortunately, our waitress was not. First, the way she presented the specials did not make me feel that they were very appealing. Second, we were asked if we were ready for our appetizers. Now I do have to say, we had asked for more bread, but that was because we were starving and hadn't received our appetizers yet 30 minutes into our sitting down. I have never been asked that question and then it took another 10 minutes to for the appetizers to come out. Dinner came out about an hour in and then we ordered desert which took another 20 minutes. During our time of waiting for various things to come out, we were not checked on or acknowledged at all. Overall, we were disappointed in the service."

"Our first visit here. Superb salmon filet, apparently poached, with an excellent light sauce. Wife's duck was also superb, although slighly sweet for her taste (but not mine). The pre-dinner bread came with a sauce that was a dijon mustard based pesto with apple vinegard, cilantro, and lemon. Exquisite! Final tab with a 15% tip was $80 including my wife's glass of wine, two coffees, and my wife's cream puff-like desert. Had the waiter remembered to have the dressing on the side for my salad it would have been a perfect 10 meal. For the price, it still was. We have eaten at hundreds of restaurants, a good many with much higher prices than this restaurant. I compare this place to the Pearl Cafe in Missoula, MT. Great & under the radar"

"The food here is definitely the star. Although my entree (duck breast)should have been hotter, the flavors were wonderful. Also, the salad (mandarin orange with pumpkin seed dressing) was very good.
The service was the worst I've experienced anywhere for years. There were two waiters who didn't care whether anyone ate or not. The first was ungodly slow. He had a heavy accent and was hard to understand, particularly since he mumbled his words and insisted on "talking" as he walked away from the table. The second waiter was a little better. He, at least, showed some interest in making us happy. Something must be done about the service. I fear it may cost some customers. I think I would go back, but allow plenty of time."

"My first experience at La Sen was terrific; my second left a lot to be desired. The place was obviously woefully understaffed and even on a fairly quiet Tues. night they were failing miserably to keep up (a tacky sign in the window advertised for servers and line cooks). Took almost an hour to get our first courses, there was no silverware or napkins at the place settings, had to ask for bread twice, etc. They were out of the dry white wine I ordered, so the waiter brought a bottle of sweet dessert wine to offer as a substitute! This was also a birthday celebration, which had been made known with the reservation, and no notice was given (not even a 'happy birthday') I'll give it 1 more try in a month and hope things have improved."

"The steak tartare was fresh and had good flavor with a unique mix your own presentation. After you've had it once you know a little better how much of each ingredient you want to mix in.
Duck Confit was very good and moist. The Beef Bourguignon was a bit strong and overpowering, especially the carrots which had soaked up too much of the sauce, it had good flavor, jsut a little too much. The chocolate Creme de Pots was a nice end to dinner.
Service was good and my water glass was never empty."

"I like La Sen very much but there tends to be a carelessness in the kitchen when it comes to portion control. My husband and I both had the Salade au Roquefort - his salad was good-sized w/sufficient Roquefort cheese but mine was about 25% smaller with a tiny amount of Roquerfort cheese. My husband joked that they gave him more because he was bigger. Joking aside, this is not acceptable - the kitchen should pay more attention to plating the dishes."

"La Sen is a great addition to downtown Concord. They seem to have responded to OT and other online criticisms about service, while it is a work in progress, La Sen was an enjoyable experience. The servers worked as a team which made it very nice. You can eat at the bar too if you don’t have a reservation. Place was packed on a Sunday, which shows the need for French bistros!"

"Two entrees excellent: mussels and lamb chops. Service timely and attentive. Bread with meal pared with intersting and pleasant spread of a blend of oil, cilantro and other green adds. Suggested red wine suited the lamb entree. Spent an enjoyable few minutes discussing the restaurant with the Basque cook-will search him out on a subsequent visit. This is a little gem and will be this area's bistro since Left Bank closed in Pleasant Hill."

The space is challenging. Small space. Popular place. On Friday @ 7:30 they were at the limit of their serving capacity."

"Unfortunately we did not have the opportunity to eat at La Sen. We had a 6:30pm reservation and at 7:30pm they were just seating the people with a 6pm reservation. At one point there were 14 people, including us, waiting in the very small waiting area, all with reservations - 6 of them, including us, left. When we checked in for our reservation we were asked if we made our reservation through Open Table and when we said yes, we were told they were having problems linking the reservations to their system that were made that way."

"Food is great but service could be better...too much elapsed time between sitting down and given the menu. Very reasonable prices for the quality of the food - the duck breast was sooo tender. Chocolate flourless cake was delicious but it would have a lot more presentation value if it was served on a large plate and not on a coffee cup saucer...just some friendly advice from a pleased diner."

"The atmosphere at Le Sen, was a little nondescript, they could use some decorations on the tables to warm the place up a bit. We both had the onion soup which was delicious, not greasy at all. My husband had the beef Bourguignon and I had the steak frites. Both were quite good, but the Bourguinon was tastier. The french fries were crisp and garlicky. The service was decent, nothing great, nothing horrible. The prices were very reasonable. I would eat here again."

"We got there about -0 minutes later than our reservation. Parking is a hassle! When we got there we were told our reservation "didn't go through!?! And therefore we had no reservation, so the hostess/waitress tool down our name and told us we now had to wait 15-20 minutes for a table. I had been to Le Sen before with my sister and the food was good. But after waiting for nearly 15 minutes and not even haven been approached to offer us a glass of water or a free drink for the trouble we left and now I don't plan to go back."

"This was a third visit for us. Our food overall has always been good to excellent. This last visit the pork chop menu item was surprisingly dry. The atmosphere is always friendly & welcoming. Waiters do need to be trained more to match the quality of food. When we recommend the restaurant, we do let people know about the service. We look forward to your brunch service."

"We had a reservation for 7. We got tied up in traffic and changed it to 7:15. We showed up at about 7:25 and were treated like we didn't have a reservation. It was going to be at least 30 minutes. We ate Thai food instead.Beware, they are running their seating on a iPhone and they don't check for updates apparently. I was really looking forward to trying this place. Too bad for them."

"La Sen is cute and cozy and could be a neighborhood gem. Service is a problem.. We arrived for our 6:30 reservation and were promptly seated. It took us 2 hours to have dinner and that was a one course meal. There was only one waiter and he was also running the front desk. He was very pleasant but obviously could not keep up. The kitchen was also way behind. We did not receive our entrees until almost an hour and a half after we sat down.
While we were waiting for our food, 2 different couples with reservations came in and there was no table for them. After being told the wait would be 30 minutes,they both left. Hopefully things will improve with time, the place has real potential."

"La Sens is a welcome upscale addition to the Concord dining scene. It has an extensive California-French menu prepared by two chefs, one French and the other Vietnamese. Our dining experience included French onion soup, butternut squash soup, grilled lamb chops, and halibut. All were excellent. Other entrees included, among others, duck confit, duck breast, Filet Mignon, pork chops, Beef bourguignon and scallops. We finished with a great dessert of poached pears with wine. On a Friday evening the restaurant was full and service was a little slow, but was professional and friendly. Our server, Christina, was very helpful. The wine list is not lengthy, but well–chosen, consisting of French and California wines. We will return soon."

"The food was outstanding some of the best food I've ever had. It was beautiful and had a nice ambiance it was quiet and welcoming. My only complaint was that it took a long time for the food to come out. From the time we put our order in to the time out entrees came out was about an hour but I didn't mind because we ate our starters and drank some wine while we waited. I would say the food is definitely worth the wait though its fantastic."
