"We had a wonderful brunch at Grapevine. It is elegant but not stuffy. The food is always delicious and well prepared and they have professional wait staff who are friendly and know their stuff. Very happy to see nothing has changed with the recent changes. With all the new places in Salem, The Grapevine is still my favorite"

"We were there for mother's day lunch. The salads were ordinary, the beef tartare bland, the steak tough, the cod overcooked. The bread was good though, as were the tomatoes. All in, pretty expensive for such an ordinary meal."

"I used to come to the grapevine all the time when I lived in Salem. On a recent trip back for the day, we were saddened and worried to discover that it had changed owners. However, the food is just as good as ever! And the wine list was excellent. They are in the middle of redoing their outside patio - I can't wait to see it."

"This great local spot recently changed hands, and with it, the Grapevine has started to offer music. The food is good, but the music so far is sort of a secret, which is a shame. Internationally renowned vocalist, Barrence Whitfield plays with a few excellent musicians every Sunday. They'll play anything from Wilson Pickett, to Elvis Costello, and other blues standards--or whatever spirit moves them (or their patrons) on the day. Go check them out on any given Sunday--except Mother's Day--and you'll be glad you know the secret too."

"Ordered Salmon medium rare and it was cooked well done and dry. I didn't send it back because I wouldn't be eating with my husband if I did. I mentioned it to the waiter, he said he would let the kitchen know and that was it. Very disappointed."

"Sunday brunch. The Grapevine offers free parking (small lot) which is a plus. The interior of the restaurant is pretty with it's white tablecloths. After being seated, a blues band began playing. The band was very good, but it made it very difficult to carry on a conversation. The waiter was terrible and the food mediocre."

"The NEW Grapevine (redone inside and out) is fantastic. We've been going there for years and have watched it through many seasons. The new owners have done a wonderful job with the new interior (fresh, contemporary, uncomplicated, better lit, and better arranged). My scallops were superb! And the wait staff? The best ever! I highly recommend this place for all kinds of occasions. Go there! Now!"

"wow!! talk about overated....sat in back room that looked like a warehouse. appetizer was served cold, two out of the three entrees were served cold leaving one person to eat alone. pepper gnocchi that were ordered were inedible, chicken replacement was good......manager took entrees off bill, as it should be, but whole experience for someone's birthday was ruined."

"Four of us had dinner the other night. my husband and I had the lamb and kasseri in phyllo which was very tasty. We also had the tarragon pappardelle and ravioli with spinach and ricotta and both were very good. The wine list is extremely extensive. We had an excellent server. We sat in the front room which was pleasant. I had never been seated there before. We had an enjoyable experience."

"Grapevine has always been a special restaurant for us. I do miss the risotto but maybe it will make a comeback. The service is great the food it great and we tend to like to sit in a quiet location away from the music. We wish you much success with your new venture and we will be there to support you. My son has done group business dinners there recently and was very pleased."

"I went to the Grapevine, which is under new ownership, during Salem Restaurant Week. I decided to order the salmon. However, it was accompanied with caramelized cauliflower. I scanned the menu looking for some type of potato to substitute it with. There were none to be found. The former owners offered these delicious fingerling potatoes with some of their meals. Furthermore, they were willing to substitute sides to the patrons' likings. Not these new owners. When I asked if I could substitute, the bartender/waiter said, "No." I thought he was joking so I laughed. He said the chef does not substitute. That is when I knew I was not returning. The bartender's service was very good. However, I expect more for these prices."

"Have been there before but they seemed disorganized this time. It was not crowded so there was no reason. Last time was much better food and serice wise. Will try one more time at some point to see if they do better. Good value for the food and wine though during restaurant week. Wines were excellent though as was the person in charge of the wine choices."

"We had dinner at a table in the bar. It was a very comfortable atmosphere with moderate noise level and plenty of room. Our bartender and server was very knowledgeable and offered suggestions, wine pairings, etc. The menu had changed since we were last here so there were plenty of new things to try. We enjoyed our first course most, oyster stew and a gnocchi special, which were both excellent. Main courses of flat iron steak and fresh cod were also very good."

"We had been meaning to try Grapevine for a while but it is on the expensive side. When a Groupon showed up we knew it was time. The ambience was very nice. As it filled up it became a little noisy. The food was excellent. They were very nice about splitting our salad and dessert for the two of us. Cocktails were done just right and the wine selection for single glasses was adequate. They have a parking lot next door and a public garage next to that so parking is not a problem."

"This restaurant is under new management and will not disappoint.... the food was tasty and creative.... the oyster stew was wonderfully prepared at the table and the tomate salad was roasted with gorgonzolla... the salmon was cooked to perfection and the fettucini had a wonderfully smokey flavor. The staff was very knowledgable and attentive.... and the bar staff was incredible - had great knowledge of their exctensive wine and beer list. We had such a great meal, we went back the next night!"

"The Grapevine changed ownership recently, and the new menu is imaginative, and good. Brunch on Sunday is fantastic, with local musical legend, Barrence Whitfield performing blues, jazz, and some classic rock and roll with a top notch trio who are well known in their own right. The decor needs a little updating, and the bar area has been changed a bit, which left it a little austere and lacking warmth and character."

"I was pleasantly surprised. It was not a restaurant I would have chosen myself as I am a rather plain eater and the menu was quite fancy. We had been given a gift certificate so we decided to go and use it. I expected to find nothing I liked and expected tiny portions. I was able to request my steak plain and it was delicious. The portion was very decent and we were quite full after the meal. The bread and the chocolate mousse were outstanding."

"Very good quality - and not overly expensive - for a city like Salem. A nice place to take a date or for a special occasion. Very extensive wine list. It claims to be Mediteranian, but I would describe it as Mediteranian-ispired modern-fusion. Dim, romantic atmosphere and the staff was very friendly, but unpretentious. Overall, it exceeded our expectations and we would definitely go back."

"We spent Valentine's Day 2012 here and had an amazing dinner and experience. We decided to do it again this year since it was so great last year. I made a reservation with open table and had to wait 15 minutes before being seated and we were seated in front of the kitchen listening to the cooks yell and swear about the food - not exactly my idea of a nice Valentine's dinner. We sat for another 15 minutes before anyone acknowledged us and gave us menus. The menu was very plain and not as exciting as last year and prices were more expensive. The food was bland and boring and not worth the prices. Overall, not a good experience. I wish we went somewhere else. The wait staff were constantly bumping into each other and looked miserable."

"Went to the Grapevine for brunch,to hear Barrence Whitfield. "Mediterranean style" The food was excellent. We began with a Bloody Mary(with a pickled carrot instead of the ubiquitous celery--would have been a nice tou to offer a plate with a selection of olives as an aperitif with the drinks), then moved on to a nice Caesar salad--nice, but not spectacular, although the homemade croutons were very good, the salad was spoiled somewhat by the sweetness of the"white anchovies" which were too sweetly vinegared & not salty enough to compliment the garlicky dressing on the salad. Hash was great, as was steak & eggs. Desserts well presented, but too large in size. Pricey($120 for 2 people, with drink & dessert)"

"My husband and I live in Salem, and go to the Grapevine a few times a year. This was our first time visiting since it is under new management. We were seated right away (with a reservation), but we weren't given food menus until we asked about 15 minutes later. Once we had our menus, I was impressed with the new menu. My husband was sad to see the pasta bolognese gone, but the pappardelle with duck he ordered made up for it! Delicious! I ordered the scallops and that was amazing too. We very rarely finish all of our meals, but our plates were wiped clean. I definitely recommend trying it out! The only thing I would have liked to see change was for the Grapevine to somehow attract a younger crowd - the average guest's age was 50-70."

"we have been going to the grapevine since it first opened over 25 years ago. it has recently been sold and is now a completely different restaurant, even though some of the staff remains. the food was very good and the drinks continue to be excellent. however...the new maitre d' leaves a LOT to be desired. he was unfriendly when i called to request a particular server, and on the tuesday before our saturday reservation, told me he wasn't sure he could accommodate my request. why not? when we arrived on saturday, the first thing we were told was that we could not have the waitress we wanted because "her section is full". are you kidding me? he never came over to introduce himself, either. he is a huge detraction."

"We went for the Sunday Blues Brunch. There were 4 of us. Two had the Grapevine Benedict and liked it. I had the Omelet, but there was too much cheese in the middle so I ended up eating around the edges. My husband had the steak and eggs, but found the steak to be tough. Service was not good. My husband asked for a coffee refill when his meal was delivered and 15 minutes later it still hadn't arrived. He had to re-request it, which took another 5 minutes to arrive. There was no salt-and-pepper at our table, but our waiter was no where to be found for me to request it.
However, the music and atmosphere was great! The musician was Barrance Whitfield and he clearly was having fun! The crowd was enthusiatic - made up for the food!"

"Overall a nice experience. The service was excellent. We were made to feel completely at home and were taken care of to the utmost. The food was also done very well. Other than some grittiness in my scallops, I have no complaints. We sat in the back on a very cold night. I worry that if we were in the front room we would have been miserable. There is no barrier from the door to the dining tables. For me, that would be totally unacceptable for a $50+/head dinner. The back room was nice but could probably use some refinement. My understanding is that this restaurant has new ownership and I expect the kinks will be ironed out. The owner was talking to tables and seemed to be very proud and excited about Grapevine."

"Top-notch all the way. The food was excellent - even for a vegetarian. I had the fettucine with mushrooms. I had hoped to try the eggplant but it wasn't on the menu that evening. Just as well since the fettucine was divine. The wine list was superb. The service was impeccable. We lost track of the time and were the last to leave at a fairly late hour. Not one of the staff complained or suggested we should have left earlier. Truly a fantastic experience all around. We'll return."
