Bess Bistro
Bess is an authentic bistro in the Stratford Arms building at 500 West Sixth Street, Austin's Old Pecan Street. Originally the Stratford Apartments built in 1918, the vintage building's old bank vault is Bess' kitchen today. Hand-crafted beers, wines and liquors are served from a stunning pewter bar custom-made in Montbazon. The ambiance provides a unique blend of casual elegance, cheeky ease, and European flair. The menu deliberately defies classification, serving eclectic fare such as Creole inspired Shrimp Bess, Mussels from Prince Edward Island, Steak Frites and old-fashioned Mac & Cheese. Natural, organic and local, the menu's common thread is the passion of the chef.

"We were visiting Austin for the first time and a friend had recommended this restaurant. Great food & service. The dishes were full of flavor and just the right size. The decor and ambiance of the restaurant was fabulous. I highly recommend for a night out on the town. The location was also wonderful next to many bars and clubs to enjoy after dinner."

"We were there for happy hour. We ate in the Bistro part of the restaurant. Loved the half price happy hour. We we had the mussels, and crab crab cakes. Both were great. The portions were a little smaller than the non happy hour portion but it was perfect size for an appetizer since we were also ordering entrees. My specialty drink and my husbands glass of Malbec was also half priced. I had the cheese shrimp with grits which was wonderful. My husband had the pork chop with stuffed squash. The pork was very good. The stuffed squash was amazing. For dessert we had beignets. The were hot and fresh. The toffee sauce and creme anglaise that was served with it made the dish. We left there stuffed and happy."

"We ate dinner there after a long day of travel and found the atmosphere very comfortable, welcoming and relaxing. Since I was watching my weight at the time I ordered the baked chicken and was delighted at the flavor. We would definitely go back."

"We started with the crispy artichokes which was one of the tastiest appetizers I've had anywhere. I had the Croque Monsieur and My husband had the bacon shrimp and grits. Both meals were wonderful. "Went to Bess on a friend's recommendation because of the atmosphere :) Turns out we loved the atmosphere, but loved the food even more. The Fried Green Tomatoes are a must. All food came out nice and hot and cooked to perfection. Wine selection was good. Service was wonderful-server very attentive and friendly. This was an excellent choice for our 10th anniversary."

"This was our third time to eat at Bess. And, so far, it has never disappointed. The menu is unique, the food very yummy, and the service exceptional. The noise level, while higher than normal on our last visit, is lower so you can actually have a conversation (which seems harder and harder to do at many of the nicer restaurants in Austin). The beignets are a MUST try for dessert. So yummy!"

"My wife and I grew up in Austin and come back several times a year since it is our favorite food town in the world-we love southwestern and nobody does it better than Austin. Well we tried Bess and now have a new favorite. Will put on our list with our favorite SW restaurant.
The setting is unique and well done and compliments the fantastic menu. However, the food is on a whole another level. There were five of us dinning together and each meal was a favorite. Our server was so attentive and suggestive that our choices were all perfect.

We have been frequent diners at Bess and find the staff and the food quite remarkable . But when we had dinner Saturday evening there was a bump in the usually smooth road at Bess. One of the recommended entrées was the Rib Eye. The meat was surrounded by fat and grizzle. Great for our dog but a disappointment for myself. Also the Fried Green Tomatoes with salmon ceviche should never be served together. We will continue to go to Bess but I felt I should call out this hopefully one time slip.

Our server Brian was new to the restaurant but obviously is not new to providing good customer service. Food was excellent - from the fried green tomato appetizer (you must get this!) to my pork chops and my wife's steak - all were cooked just right without too much fuss from competing sauces and spices. Bess does it right, even to the point of the valet standing out in the street, in the rain to find us a cab ride back to the hotel. For a special night or just a really good meal you should definitely give Bess Bistro a try."

"I took my fiancé and her family here (all adults) for a nice birthday dinner. We chose bess bistro because we liked the menu choices (viewed online) and had not been here before. The restaurant is cute and the booths are romantic and stylish. No complaints on service or food. We ordered a really wide assortment of the menu and shared bites so I was able to taste it all. We ran up a large tab between all of our food and drinks. I have no regrets."

"Food was excellent. We've never had anything bad at Bess. The mussels are by far one of the most outstanding menu items. Jonathan, our server was fantastic! He was attentive but not overbearing, humorous, gave great recommendations and a terrific addition to our evening. "Took my wife here on our first year anniversary. Can't remember what she had, but I had the scallops with the pea risotto - very delicious and she enjoyed her dish as well. Would come here again to try other things on the menu."

"Food was very well prepared. best escargot I ever had. very original dish. it got crowed very quickly and the service slowed down to what you expect. if you are tucked in a corner or behind a pillar you may have to wave a napkin. All the stone makes it very loud and noisey. Needs sound deadning tiles up in the rafters to help with the echoie noise level.
But it was a wonderful evening with food worth going back for. Valet parking is a plus."

$1 with the buffet. The buffet itself was very good (and I'm not a buffet person). There was a nice
selection of fresh fruit, bagels, bacon, croissants and more. Made to order items are included and
I enjoyed the pork belly eggs Benedict. We would definitely return for Sunday brunch and we would
like to try Bess for dinner. Nice atmosphere and outstanding service."

"I have been here a few times for dinner... wonderful food, so I thought why not bring the family for brunch? Bad choice- I do NOT recommend brunch here. It is buffet style for $19 pp and the buffet is sad..to say the least. You have a salad, mac and cheese, bacon/sausage, with assorted pastries. Yes, that's it. You can also order eggs a la carte and pancakes, which are included in the $19. Seriously, the buffet spanned about my arms length (well maybe a tad longer)... I would definitely expect more for $19. Another thing that REALLY annoys me about buffets is when they make everyone do the buffet... you can't order off menu? Not cool.... won't be coming back for brunch, and now probably not for dinner."

"My partner and I went to Bess Bistro for the first time on a Saturday night (with a reservation). The dining room was pleasant and beautiful, and the wait staff was attentive and checked on us at regular intervals. We shared the cheese plate to start, he ordered the steak and frites, and I ordered the shrimp and grits. Everything was cooked perfectly, the portions were generous (especially the cheese plate!), and everything was flavorful. We'll be back!"

"I really do like Bess. They have a good menu that covers the basics and adds in some interesting concepts. Their special is usually really good too. I have to admit that their service has been both miserable and great in the past. It was not so great on this visit. The drinks took a really long time, each time, and when we mentioned this to our server we received an apology and an excuse of a trainee bartender, but at no time did a manager come visit our table. I found this to be a fundamental failure in good management practices. A lesson should be taken from Bartletts on this.
Having said all of that, I would still come back. The prices aren't bad, the food is good, and it's a great ambiance..."
