"From the hostess to the General Manager, The General showed how clueless they are to the art of customer service. Our Mothers' Day reservation for 4, requested table off main traffic path. Upon arrival, asked for booth & told booths for parties of 7 seating us at what hostess called a "lovely" table...smack in the center of traffic. Really?? After mediocre, meal lukewarm, pre-made brunch, we mentioned to waiter that booths were seated with parties of 3...nowhere close to stated policy. Said he'd send General Manager to us...never arrived. When leaving, stopped at hostess to share disappointment. General Manager asked if we'd like to move to booth...a little late! Told her we'd already eaten & she asked what we wanted her to do...CLUELESS!!!"

"The food was good and our waiter was nice, but the night we went there was a huge fight that broke out that left me with scratches and our table completely destroyed. Two guys decided to take it upon themselves to get into a brawl and proceeded to fall on me and continue fighting until management/security finally separated them.
The only person that followed-up with me after the fight was a bus boy cleaning up the shattered plates. Not one manager came over to our table to make sure we were OK. In fact, they had the audacity to hand us our check without an apology of any kind. It was quite shocking considering this is a rather new establishment and ultimately, this is the HOSPITALITY business. It was very off putting to say the least"

"I went here on a date a few weeks ago and we loved the fun vibe and cool atmosphere. The food was delicious, the portions were great, and I could definitely see the bar space livening up after 11 or so. Will come back, for sure!"

"The food is excellent!! I will defiantly be eating here again. They could update their Vodka selection for those of us that hate Grey Goose or Belvedere but other than that this place is a gem. Try the Duck-it was perfection. The Ribs literally melt in your mouth."

"Overall I enjoyed The General but it's not a place I would take a date; it's too loud to hear the person across from you unless they're shouting. That being said, it looks like a great place to go with a group of friends. The food was good, the bar scene works (even though the bartenders work at their own pace) and the overall experience was solid."

"Awesome restaurant. Good vibe. Menu is trendy and food delicious. I had the spicy tuna roll and the mussels and both were really good. One thing I did not like was the "charging station". If you need to charge your phone it's a $3 fee. The food is expensive (ie $16 for a 5 piece spicy tuna roll) but its good so to me it's worth it. If I'm paying for an expensive meal, I don't think it's right that I have to pay to charge my phone too. Obviously this doesn't apply to everyone but just something i observed that I thought was a bit uncool."

"Overall, I found the General to be overpriced given the quality of the food. I have eaten at some of the better restaurants in the city for nearly the same price, and the quality of this food was nowhere near as good. For example, the chicken dish we ordered, which would not be enough for one person on its own, was $22. It would have been impressive as $12 takeout, but as a tiny, gourmet family style dish it was not. The salmon tartar was actually unenjoyable.
The wine menu was mis-paginated, the waiter tried to shuffle us out the door when we decided against the $11 donut for dessert. We had a good time, but were really not impressed with the food. The fried rice was good but otherwise, average would be a compliment."

"Food was unique and well prepared. Service was friendly however we felt very rushed. Six of us were enjoying some wine and pleasant conversation, browsing a very elaborate and unique menu when the waitress, (well before we had decided what to order),came to take our order. Although she was quite helpful in explaining the dishes, the food came out so fast that we were not even finished enjoying and sharing our appetizers when the mains came out.Before we were done with the entrees, they came and asked for desert choices. It was impossible to enjoy the meal when being rushed. The whole meal took under an hour from the time we entered to the time we left. NOTHING could have been freshly cooked at that pace."

"I really wanted to like this place because all my pals said it was the "it" place. Unfortunately it just didn't quite hit it. The service was just OK. It's really loud and the crowd was mainly wannabe hipsters, short rich guys with way too pretty dates and hopeful single girls. The food wasn't bad but it just wasn't good enough to compensate for the atmosphere. If you're over 30 there are a million better choices in NYC. Sorry General. I really did want to love you."

"overall good experience but the service was very slow. though the waiter was attentive, the restaurant was just not on its game that night. food took forever to arrive and was usually off temperature. there was some issue with a health inspector in the place which somehow meant we couldn't get olives with our drinks. (even delivery of the drinks was very slow). important note: the restaurant did comp the drinks without our even asking! so, overall, a fun place with a great scene both of which made the slow service tolerable."

"They will try to seat you in cafe (even if you've had your reservation for a month) and will tell you there is a long wait for the dining room (they told us it was 45 minute wait), even when it's empty. After we were taken to our table in the cafe, we got up and went back to hostess and said we wouldn't stay to sit in the cafe, and that we'd had the reservation for 1 month and were celebrating a bday. We were then PROMPTLY taken to the dining room, and 4 other two person tables were seated w/in 20 minutes. CLEARLY NOT A 45 MIN WAIT. My husband and I dine out a lot, and I don't appreciate being lied to or duped or made to feel unworthy."

"Food was okay, dishes were inconsistent. Cinderella risotto was excellent... Other dishes forgettable. Service was pushy and annoying. It's obvious they are trained to sell, sell, sell. "Everything about the experience was amazing. The waitress we had was outstanding and her knowledge of the menu was awesome.
The flavors of the cuisine were beyond our expecations. N.Y. has so many outstanding dining spots but this will be one I'd return to again and again."

"Took 2 months to get a reservation at 8:30pm on a Friday. The cocktails were unimpressive. Had the Doc and Lady Dagger drinks - disappointed in both. The reuben spring rolls were great, the cinderella risotto was also well cooked and in an edible pumpkin, the buddhist delight veggies were very good (a little salt heavy), and we didn't do any dessert. Chicken tacos were good, but still not impressive. Overall, it gets a lot of hype. They have no reservations during desired dining hours (8-10) but when you walk in half the tables are open and it doesn't get busy until 10/11. Probably recent opening kinks to work out - but there are a lot better restaurants to eat at in NYC"

"After waiting over an hour after our reservation time, we were finally seated. Another 20 minutes at the table, and still no food service. At this point, it is 1 and 1/2 hours after the reservation, and we looked around the dining room and NONE of the tables within 30 ft of us had food. We cut our losses (6 drinks = $110 at the bar) because we did not want to spend the entire Saturday night here. It was not the waiter's fault because there was something seriously wrong with how this restaurant was managed. How can this be owned by the same people who run Catch?? VERY DISAPPOINTING."

"After hearing about the general, i added it to my list of "must try's". despite all the negative reviews preceding mine, i wanted to try it for myself. the actual restaurant itself has a very cool vibe and decor. the manager dave spent the entire night checking in on us and was quite pleasant. only major negative was the coat check.. which was a disaster and the girls working it were either never there or not very good at managing it.and now the food: edadame had a wasabi salt-nice touch. chicken tacos were REALLY good. short rib pork buns are NOT worth it, mediocre at best. peking duck was fabulous.. dont even get me started on the skin. fried rice was a little dry. green tea donut was.. a donut(i love donuts). choc trifle.. messy but good"
