"An excellent menu and wine list coupled with a relaxing atmosphere make this a wonderful setting for any special occassion, or just a desire for good food. "The food was great especially the filet minion with foie gras on top. The lighting was right. Music was perfect. HOWEVER, we just don't know why we always get sent to the cramped small table in front of the kitchen while there were still many tables and booth open (restaurant was 75% empty on a weekday). We spent $300 for just two of us, at least give us a better table for us to put all the appetizers, soups, salads, wine, and water. We had to rush to get to our next dish. By the time our entrees was here, we were already full."

"This is the second time I go to Harris in a week. I came back for the Rossini, wow!!! again!!
Last time I had given a 4 star to food due to the Ceasar salad, not outstanding, however this time I had the cured salmon, amazing! The salmon is fresh and the in-house cured is sooo good.
The Rossini filet is beautiful. The steak is like butter, really melts. The truffle sauce is out of the world and the combination with the foie gras is outstanding!
Ambiance is as most good steak houses (dont know why!), wood everywhere, a little dark big round tables (even for two), elegant but not overwhelming.
Service is impecable, both times I have been there.
Dont miss the classic Martini, a must.
Next time I'll save more and get the kobe!!!"

"Amazing service.
Had a ceasar salad, unfortunately it lacked the wow factor. The onion soup was not a classic french soup, but it was great.
On the steaks, beautifull pepper Ribeye. It was a soft great marble steak cooked amazing with black pepper crust, simply amazing.
I am also a fan of eating meat without any sort of sauce, however, my friend asked for the rossini (filet mignon with foie gras on top and a truffle sauce)... one of the most spectacular dishes. The foie gras was amazing and to my surprise it complemented very good the fillet, but the truffle sauce.... no words for it, it was beyond good, amazing... and enhanced the flavor of the steak, which by the way was superb.
P.S. Very good classic martini."

"After eating at Chez Panisse the night before, I felt bad for Harris' as there was no way they could live up to the magic that was Chez Panisse. But this joint really blew me away. This is old school steakhouse dining that's still doing it right after all of these years. We never got around to dessert, but the bread, the salads, the steaks and the sides were all to die for. The service was impeccable and the entire vibe of the room made me feel like it was 30 years ago. If you like old-fashioned steak joints, I highly recommend Harris'."

"If you want quality steak, it's the only place to dine in SF as far as we are concerned. The steak tartar is wonderful, and the 49er New York was over the top! Their wine list offers a wide and varied selection to accompany any of the "treats" that are listed on their menu. We also ordered the steak diane in a pepper sauce as an alternative, which was no problem for the kitchen to accomodate. We can't wait to return to SF to visit Harris again."

"Harris's has been our favorite steak house for years. The Staff and service is wonderful. We especially enjoy the bartender "Dave" who always remembers our name and drinks. We have tried all the steak houses in San Francisco, and NONE of them compare to Harris's. We have lived in San Francisco all our lifes."

"Harris steak was very substandard and martini was "wet" not dry. Almost any restaurant serves a better steak. Upon leaving they would not call a cab, but directed us to the valet outside. He was bringing up cars and was ignoring those of us who wanted a taxi. I had to go out on Van Ness and hail a cab myself. I don't know how they got their reputation, but I will not return."

"Not bad, but not super either. The service was ok - our busboy was more attentive than our actual server. The appetizers and salad courses were pretty tasty, and the primerib was generous enough for leftovers. Like I said, not terrible, but I won't be rushing back there anytime real soon."

"If you want great steaks in SF, this is the place. Have come here for years, and visited most of the others but Harris is still the one. A SF institution without a lot of tourists. Rich interior with lots of wood and leather. Well lit with high ceilings and fantastic decor. Old style without being or looking old. Not a huge menu but everything they do is perfect. Personally I would like another potato choice or two, that goes for the desserts too but otherwise I have no complaints. The steaks are done just right and are to die for. The porterhouse is big enough for two if you like to share."

"Loved our dinners. I had the filet and my wife had the lobster. Yummy. Best ceasar salad in town. We will be back soon. My son had his birthday while he was in Israel for the past 4 weeks. There is no beef to be found in Israel, if you can get my drift? When he gets back at the end of March, he will be ready to celebrate with a big steak at Harris!!!!! You are a bit pricey, but it was and is well worth it, too."

"I took my awesome friend out to celebrate her birthday, and we both had imported Kobe steaks. They were delicious, very tender and extremely flavorful. "Booked a reservation for five for 7:45pm on a Saturday, the night before. I would've picked House of Prime Rib up the street but you have to do that a month in advance. You get more choices of steak at Harris' but to do a comparison to HOPR, I ordered the full size prime rib, English cut (thinly sliced) and medium-rare. It was decent but doesn't compare to HOPR's super tender, juicy, melt-in-your-mouth paradise prime rib. Harris' does, however, do better creamed spinach.

Service was excellent. They even let you sit at your table if your whole party hasn't arrived yet, unlike HOPR. Our waiter was great.

The atmosphere is peaceful. Lighting is a little dimmer, the waitstaff not as aggressively upbeat as some are at HOPR."

"The food here is the best! I have eaten quite a bit of steak in my day and the steaks here are divine! The scalloped potatoes are phenomenal, too. Thanks you Harris for making my boyfriend's birthday dinner amazing and so delicious. Two people with apps and entrees and tons of booze for less than 200 - see ya soon!"

"We celebrated our tax refund with a great meal at Harris'. There is just no substitution for dry aged steak. I had the ribeye and my wife had the filet - both were cooked perfectly rare and tasted delicious. The only thing wrong with the steaks at Harris' is that they will ruin your steaks anywhere else."

"My dining experience on Valentines was excellent. The waiter was very nice and friendly. The food was to die for. I have been to other steak houses on Valentines and their staff would take the order and dissapear. Our waiter kept coming back and checking on us which we were a party of 4. "very large restaurant, very helpful staff, food is better then average I would visit this place again with friends and the wife. The steaks were made almost perfect tender, juicy, crisp on the ends, only thing it lacked was flavor, it lacked salt, I had to add salt to every bite I took even the ends which usually has crystalized salt. "Unfortunately, the drive and money we spent on this place was not worth it. Especially not for the $75 American Kobe. It was tough and I've had better, lower grade steaks at other steakhouses (and dare I say, even from Costco!). The waitress was slow, except for when it came time to give us our bill! The Prime Rib and Martini's were good, but unfortunately not good enough for my family and I to come back."

"The food was good but not outstanding. I wouldn't say it was the BEST steak I ever had. French Onion Soup was not typical style, so that was disappointing. Service was very good as well as the decor/ambiance. We could actually hear each other talk! We noticed several families their with children under age 10. I wouldn't recommend this for families. We also noticed a few people that were very inappropriately dressed: jeans, hoodies, etc. Clearly says on the website "no jeans". It's not the restaurant's fault that this happens. Looked like they had great martinis! As far as quality of steak, I think the ribeye at Fleming's was better. We were seated at small table; I asked for a booth but they said no even though there were empty booths."

"Overall an excellent experience. The Filet Mignot Rossini and Pepper NY Steak were to DIE for -- and in fact so was the foie gras appetizer on a bed of brioche. "After living 6 blocks from the restaurant for over 14 years, I finally ventured over. With 7 of my best friends(Man's Holiday Steak Dinner), we were looking forward to trying a new place. After waiting about 15 minutes, we were shown our table. We were seated in one of their many booths with an extension placed at the end of the table to accommodate 3 of us in the aisle (not to speak of the 5 other men crammed into the actual booth. Needless to say, we were all very uncomfortable. Overall, the food and the service were fine, but the seating arrangement made it difficult to enjoy the experience. In fact after the steaks were served, we immediately asked for the check so we could escape. We definitely will not be returning for this event!"

"Harris' is a quiet, business casual or greater, steakhouse with a large catalog of wines and a notable selection of steaks. Medium rare follows the traditional definition of red warm center, and they aren't afraid to serve it. My dad and I went to this restaurant for a nice dinner the night before I had to go back home, and we both enjoyed the food and service. One thing I enjoyed (which has been lacking at other restaurants in San Francisco) is a real steak knife that cuts."

"If I had to have a steak and there no one else was open I would go back to Harris. The steak was great but have them leave off everything else. The cream of asparagus soup tasted like sink water colored green and it was not cheap. The salad was bland and the sides for dinner were not much better, even the baked potato was dry. My Prime rib was perfectly cooked and the fillet was excellent, so they should just stick to meat. So tell the waiter to just bring the meat!"

"For a double-birthday treat, Harris' was a gem. We had a very attentive waiter who met our varied demands for food and drink and accommodated us nearly perfectly.

Since it was a very special occasion, we both ordered any and everything that we wanted and Harris' kitchen did not disappoint.
Aware that we were bracing for a big meal, we prepared ourselves with martinis: Bombay and Tanqueray, olives on the side. We split a well-dressed and tasty Caesar Salad. My friend, Tommy, who was "VERY hungry" was advised about 2 steaks on the menu & decided on the 49er New York Strip and was very satisfied with the amount and the quality of the meat. I had the top-of-the-line Filet Mignon Rossini which but for a tough edge was so tender.

"Restaurant was busy so service was not as good as it normally is. I have been to Harris several other times and it has never been as bad. Our water glasses went empty. There was three of us and the waiter ran out of water and left without filling all of the glasses. I thought she was going to come back to get more water but never came back. Other than that, it was ok, but you can tell how good the service is by how attentive they are to your water glass."

"Food was divine,ambiance was nice. Spent 2.5 hours at the restaurant. Not the fine dining service I expected, more like being in the presence of a chain restaurant waiter.Our waiter introduced himself but did not give us a run down of the specials however, we did overhear him go through it with the table over yonder. The whole time we were there, besides the time he brought our food,he came over once to ask how we were doing. Throughout the night, we were never asked if we needed a wine/cocktail refill. When he did come over, he had this thing where he seemed to enjoy slamming our plates and glasses onto the table. Thank god the water server came over several times or else we would've died from dehydration. Lastly,waited 15mins for my coat"

"This was my second visit to Harris' Restaurant. My first visit was phenomenal--the food was amazing and the service was great. This second visit comfortably fits in my "sub-par" category. The food was mediocre at best, and the service was insulting. The waitress came to our table exactly 6 times: to tell us the specials, take our orders, inquire about dessert, drop off our check, drop off our bill again (because she had forgotten if she had given it to us or not), and finally to pick up our bill. I understand that younger parties are not that established yet in life, and are unable to tip as well as older ones, but we deserve a level of courtesy and professionalism that would uphold the reputation of a restaurant of Harri's stature."

"Harris is an outstanding dinner house. The beef is superb and the presentation excellent
Side dishes match the entree in quality and preparation. The staff is professional without being pretentious; they are friendly but not familiar. My impression, as a retired Human Resources administrator, is that this is a good place to work, that the staff come and stay a while. All of which tells me, as a customer, that management is doing, not just something, but everything right."

"We read the reviews on your site before we decided to make a reservation. We are from LA and are big beef eaters and were looking forward to some "5" STAR beef! But we were very dissapointed in our choices! I ordered a large cut Prime Rib (bone in) Medium, my beef arrived "well done", grey and very very chewy! I have had cuts at Morton's, Ruth Chris and Lowery's that would almost melt in your mouth! I would put the cut I had in the same class as Denny's or AppleBees! The desert list was very limited for a steak house and the coffee tasted like it was sitting several hours on the burner! I also noticed that 2 of the 4 people sitting across from us had to send there steaks back as well! I paid $150.00 for a $25.00 meal!"

"My husband and I arrived before our other 2 guests so we asked the maitre d if we could be seated and our guests could be escorted to the table when they arrived. We have no idea why she was so opposed to this idea nor why she had such a negative attitude but it surely does not make us want to go back to Harris the next time we are in San Francisco. My husband said she came into the room where we were eated to seat another party and scouled at him - totally inappropriate! It is amazing that a restaurant that is so well known would have someone so inexperienced as the person to whom you speak as you enter the establishment."

"As usual, the food & service were outstanding. The waitstaff went out of their way to accomodate my wife's birthday with a sugar-free fruit dessert (she's diabetic). Then she left her scarf in the restaurant and the bus boy came out after us to return it while we were waiting for the car. Harris' is tops!"

"I adore the Harris restaurant. The food is excellent. The portions are huge! And, the martinis are fantastic! I really like the booths. And, when I graduated with my MBA my husband brought a lovely bottle of wine for all of our guests -- not that many. The somelier (sp?) got a taste and did not charge us a corkage fee!

Atmosphere, elegance, food -- it's great."
