Lovely 'low key service' - attentive and just right. Excellent food (although seasonal veg side dish was a little on the small size) - perfectly cooked.

"We enjoyed our lunch, although the portions were fairly small, it is okay as long as your are planning to enjoy aa 3 course meal rather than expecting a substantial main course. The food was quite enjoyable, but felt like the chef might have been a bit bored, and just lacked the finer touches tastewise. My husbands dessert was very unpleasant, the spiced rhubarb and apple crumble was not cooked through, the crumble was obviously added later and there was not enough to match the fruit content. The spice flavour was unpleasant and unsympathetic. The beer and whisky choice was fair, and the chocolate cake was delicious. A mixed bag, which would not have scored as highly as this, if I had to pay the evening costs..."

"The food was fine - although the fish was very small in the Fish & Chips.Service really good BUT... I booked a table for 5 at 3.30 and we were hurried to our table - we ordered our 2nd bottle of wine at about 20 to 5 - I should have been told that the restaurant closed at 5. Actually, it should have been made clear on the website - I don't think 90 minutes for a 3 course meal is enough time to enjoy it .... in fact it's almost fast food.When I asked pointed out that we still had over a half bottle of wine to drink, I was told that we 'could take it homke if we liked' Very disappointing"

"We were seated immediately on arrival, and the restaurant offered an express menu for lunch, which if an hurry could be completed within 45minutes. The food was full of taste with good use of herbs, and good presentation."

"Thoroughly enjoyed lunch. met up with family - convenient for all. No pressure to order quickly but didn't feel as though waiting too long either. "This was our first visit to Blackfriars and we rated the food quite highly,it was well presented and flavoursome.It is always nice to have time to chat and enjoy each course but we did feel the service was a bit on the slow side. "The whole experience was wonderful - wouldn't change a thing. The service was impeccable - the right level of service but not too in your face. Our waiter was very knowledgable about the wine selection and chose us a lovely bottle - we even bought another to take home! There was lots to choose from on the menu and we weren't rushed at all. For a special occasion I would recommend it to anyone - we shall certainly be going back."

"We had a gorgeous meal for my Fiance's 30th Birthday accompanied by friendly and attentive waiting staff. The scallops with vanilla and fennel puree were divine. The two bird roast and the venison were gorgeous. They'd even remembered from my booking that it was a special occassion... without being prompted... and put a birthday candle in one of our desserts! Fantastic! There was a great choice of wine so we had a fabulous New Zealand Pinot Noir. Champagne was reasonable too. All in all a really wonderful choice with plenty of locally sourced quality produce, which is really important to us. A wonderful restaurant! We'll definitely be back!"

"We really enjoyed the restaurant, one of the party found his meal to be a bit grisly, the waiter agreed to take the cost of the food off the bill (Hmmmmm) the waiter oversly knew about the origine of the meat !!!!!!

"Excellent ingredients and good cooking, but most dishes could have done with being more visually appealing and had more vegetables. The desserts, coffee, wine and beer were all perfect. The service was a little lacking in attentiveness, and the outside door near our table often stuck ajar, meaning we were often in a draft. Overall a lovely experience, but not great value for money."

"The "set" December Christmas lunch was enjoyable. The service was very good and inobtrusive. The wine was beautifully chilled and delicious. However the main course was not very hot (Turkey and trimmings) It was warmish, so I did not complain, as I did not want to spoil the occasion, but it definately should have been hotter. I was also very disappointed and surprised that when we arrived for a "set" menu at 1.30pm there was no Beef left on the menu."

"We dined in December and only had a Christmas menu to choose from. At £30 per head for 3 courses we did expect a decent standard. We got poor.
Starters ok(ish). Mains were a big disappointment. Desserts very ordinary. Having no A La Carte option was not at all good. Reviews did suggest some of the A La Carte options were worth trying. Standard fare just because it is Christmas is lazy.

Service was poor with little attentiveness. All in all not at all good.

Not an experience we will repeat. Not being from Newcastle we checked online reviews and this place did come up as highly regarded. Either the online review service is not reliable or Newcastle is a culinary desert."

"Although our visit coincided with several large office Christmas parties this did not detract at all from the experience. "Food was absolutely top notch delicious although a little more would've been nice. On second thoughts it helped my diet; had I had my partner with me instead of a 40 something friend watching her weight, he may have wanted more. A little on the expensive side but I think that's just a reflection of my purse and the very high quality experience not quite matching up. The staff were unobtrusive and polite and there at all the right moments. Setting is lovely: the interior and beautiful garden/square area outside. I sat at the tables outside to smoke before starting my dinner and was looking forward to a coffee and another cigarette at the end but was disappointed to find the council had locked it... that was irritating...but overall fab."

"Everything was fine, serice, food etc until paying the bill. The restaurant offered a 2 for 1 deal but the bill only showed for 2 of the 6 people in the party. This was corrected but the 10% service charge was not reduced."

"Have had a couple of great meals at Blakfriars but on this occasion the experience fell a little short. There were 3 dishes not available from the main course menu (which from a list of 8 or 9 restricts choice somewhat) and the steak that I ordered contained quite a lot of sinew and was not as tender as I would expect. For some reason the starter portions were also very small indeed. Service was excellent though and hopefully this was just a one off."

"My partner and I visited Blackfriars for dinner which happened to lie on an arranged whisky promotional night. We were informed of the changes to the normal menu prior to our reservation and were told this would actually work out cheaper than usual. The food was average at best and the wine provided with each meal on the set menu was poor. The whisky was an interesting addition to an otherwise disappointing experience but the cost of this was not made at all clear. I was extremely shocked to find the bill totaling £120 for such an average dinner. It was only now that it became apparent that we had been charged extortionate amounts for the whisky experience which we weren't even fully involved in - very disappointing in general."

"you can't fault the food but the starters were very pricey for what you got, especially the pigeon starter. two tiny pieces of pigeon for £8. it was nice though and the pork main and the chocolate tart pudding were excellent"
